Visa and Entry

Most visitors can enter Hong Kong without a visa for short stays, depending on their nationality. Be sure to check the visa requirements in advance and ensure your passport has at least six months' validity.

Currency

The local currency is the Hong Kong Dollar (HKD). Credit cards are widely accepted, but it's a good idea to carry cash for smaller vendors, especially in markets and some taxis.

Transportation

Hong Kong has an efficient and extensive public transportation system. The MTR (Mass Transit Railway) is the quickest way to get around. You can also use buses, ferries, and trams. Consider purchasing an Octopus Card for easy access to all modes of transport, as well as payments at shops and restaurants.

Weather

Hong Kong has a subtropical climate. Summers (June to August) are hot and humid, while winters (December to February) are mild. Be sure to check the weather forecast, especially during typhoon season (July to September).

Language

The official languages are Chinese (Cantonese) and English. English is commonly used in business and tourism, so visitors should have no problem navigating the city.

Safety

Hong Kong is generally a very safe city, with low crime rates. However, as with any destination, keep your belongings secure, especially in crowded areas.

Health and Hygiene

Hong Kong is known for its high standards of cleanliness. Tap water is safe to drink, but many locals prefer bottled water. Make sure you have travel insurance, and check for any health advisories before traveling.

Tipping

Tipping is not compulsory in Hong Kong, but it's common to round up the bill in restaurants. Some places may add a 10% service charge, in which case no additional tip is necessary.

Shopping and Bargaining

Hong Kong is a shopper's paradise, from luxury brands to street markets. Bargaining is only common in markets such as the Ladies’ Market or Temple Street Night Market, but prices are usually fixed in malls and shops.

Electrical Plugs

The standard voltage is 220V, and the plug type is the UK-style three-pronged plug. Be sure to bring an adaptor if your devices use a different plug.
